One of one, large bowl crafted from British rush, grown in Somerset. The rush stems are harvested by the artist before being dried and prepared. This detailed piece is created using a tight pairing weave around a large former. Ella works in tandem with the rush stems to create works that she hopes will bring calm and joy to a space. This vessel represents the concept of abundance through reciprocity and the idea that 'all gifts are multiplied in relationship' - a quote from Robin Wall Kimmerer which the artist feels is deeply poignant.

British rush. The colour of the rush will slowly mellow to a more golden tone over time. Wipe with a damp cloth to clean and leave to air-dry. As this is an organic product, ensure it is not stored in damp conditions.

MEASUREMENTS: 39cm diameter 17cm height. As no human is the same, neither are the rush stems and Ella chooses to respect each one, working symbiotically with the plant to craft each piece.

    Inspiration and Techniques

Ella harvests her rush by hand in the rivers of Somerset, before drying it in her grandparents’ shed. She loves being able to follow the rush from river to finished product and believes that this gives her a greater respect for her material. Rush Basketry is an endangered craft with very few practitioners remaining.
