- Process: The wood is stabilised by placing it in a vacuum chamber filled with resin, followed by curing in an oven to harden and create a glossy finish.
- Resin Mixing: A two-part liquid resin mixture is prepared, split into various colours, and combined with burl wood in a mould, creating unique patterns.
- Finishing: After curing in a pressure pot to remove bubbles, the box is turned on a wood lathe to achieve its final shape.
- Benefits of Stabilising: Stabilising the wood makes the finished trinket box more durable, resistant to moisture and scratches, and easier to maintain.
Inspiration and Techniques
Jason’s work is inspired by the natural world, particularly space, oceans, and planets. By combining wood and resin, he has developed a technique that mimics the fluidity of painting, where the resin is poured in a way that interacts with the wood to create striking, dynamic designs. This method allows for more creative freedom and enables him to incorporate smaller pieces of wood, giving each piece a unique, layered look. For Jason, woodturning is not just a craft but also a therapeutic practice that helps him cope with pain while expressing his creativity.
