Inspiration and Techniques
Julianna makes each piece by hand from leather and Burel wool using both traditional hand-stitching and machine stitching processes. Her designs are sleek and minimal to allow the beauty and quality of the materials to stand out. Used in many of her designs, Burel wool adds a special touch of character unique to Maragold and has become a distinction of the brand for its texture, durability, and rich artisan tradition. It comes from a small, environmentally-conscious and zero-waste factory that fell into decline with the rise of synthetic materials in the 60’s. The factory was revived in the early 2000’s to preserve and breathe new life into an ancestral heritage craft as well as restore jobs to the region. Pairing vegetable tanned leather with this Portuguese wool means that each Maragold piece tells a story and will stand the test of time developing unique character through use.
