Catalan-Style Willow Trays Workshop

£65.00

Saturday 18th April

In this hands-on willow weaving workshop with Amanda Rayner, you’ll learn how to make a simple yet striking Catalan-style tray using traditional basketry techniques.

The session begins by creating a circular hoop to form the framework. From there, you’ll weave willow rods into the frame, using different coloured willows to create a patterned infill. Amanda will guide you through the reverse pairing technique, showing you how to tie in and secure the sticks to achieve a strong, balanced structure.

By the end of the workshop, you’ll have made your own woven tray or platter, ideal for serving bread rolls, canapés, fruit, cheese, or simply as a decorative piece for the home.

The workshop is designed for beginners and focuses on learning by doing, with plenty of guidance throughout.

    Inspiration and Techniques

Amanda’s inspiration for her weaving comes from the wonderful colours she grows and harvest and as the willow dries the colours change and mellow, every variety has its own subtle qualities. She loves to combine this with driftwood she finds on the beach and from the shapes of branches fallen in the woods. Some of her favourite techniques you see here are fitching where 2 strands of willow are woven alternately as a single band in the middle of a basket- this looks simple but takes practise and skill to get it right and it’s lovely to take the rods around again to create a chain-link effect.
