Celtic Knot Rope Mat Workshop
£45.00
Saturday 7th March
Learn how to make a traditional rope trivet using a Celtic knot pattern in this hands-on workshop with Laurence Knoop.
During the session, you’ll work with natural flax rope and learn how to use a Swedish fid to create a simple rope splice. Laurence will guide you through the knot pattern step by step, explaining the principles behind the technique and helping you develop confidence working with rope.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with a completed circular rope trivet (or mat), measuring approximately 24cm in diameter, as well as the knowledge to continue exploring knot work at home. The workshop is relaxed, practical, and well suited to beginners.

Inspiration and Techniques
Laurence’s work is shaped by both necessity and environment. Living on the water with a young family, he’s drawn to designs that balance utility with quiet beauty. He explores traditional knotting and basketry methods, reworking them through his own lens to suit rope as a primary material. Using mainly flax rope, he incorporates subtle, plant-dyed tones created in collaboration with a natural dyer, giving each piece its own gentle character. Every object he makes is an invitation to live simply and make space for the handmade.
