I’ve written before about the number of fantastic community initiatives that have emerged out of the pandemic. It’s heart-warming to see, and provided us with rays of hope in dark times. And so, for this week’s journal, I want to continue on that theme, by dedicating it to a wonderful community project.
Launched in 2019 as a joint project between Marcus and illustrator Willam Redgrove, ASYMBAL is an ongoing community-focused art project on a mission to unite communities and cultures throughout London. In early 2019, Marcus and William started out by running a series of creative workshops in Battersea, aimed at hard-to-reach groups within the Wandsworth area.
But perhaps more impressive than the numerous exhibitions and workshops they’ve run since they started out is the deep-rooted values that underpin the project. In their own words, they believe that everyone in society deserves a rich and varied creative education. By directly engaging with communities in creative activities, as artists they assume personal responsibility for amplifying the voices of the most vulnerable in society. Ultimately, ASYMBAL exists to enrich the lives of the less fortunate, bringing artists, communities and neighbors together.
As is the case with so many fantastically meaningful initiatives, the boys behind ASYMBAL have had to put their efforts on hold due to the pandemic. I wanted to write this journal regardless so that, when life restarts later this year and artists everywhere can come together once again, you’ll be aware of the brilliant work these boys are doing, and perhaps even support their efforts. I look forward to seeing what the future holds for them.
