MATERIALS & SOURCING:
Flax has been grown for its fibres in the UK for thousands of years, possibly as early as the late bronze age, and certainly by the middle ages. Linen cloth, woven from flax fibres, was an important alternative to woollen clothing, but the advent of imported cotton around the turn of the nineteenth century led to the demise of the flax industry in the UK.
The rope used in this item was produced by a traditional ropemaker in the UK, using flax grown in Europe. It was created solely from natural fibres, and does not contain any synthetic materials or glue. Flax rope has a distinctive smell best likened to fresh hay, which will fade over time.
The rope has been hand-dyed by a production partner in the Peak District, using natural dyes.
Inspiration and Techniques
Laurence’s work is shaped by both necessity and environment. Living on the water with a young family, he’s drawn to designs that balance utility with quiet beauty. He explores traditional knotting and basketry methods, reworking them through his own lens to suit rope as a primary material. Using mainly flax rope, he incorporates subtle, plant-dyed tones created in collaboration with a natural dyer, giving each piece its own gentle character. Every object he makes is an invitation to live simply and make space for the handmade.
