Judy Caplin

Based in the heart of Teesdale, just yards from the River Tees, the rugged landscape and weather-worn features of the dale are a constant source of inspiration for her ceramics. She creates kitchen and tableware designed to feel wonderful in the hand and look beautiful on the table—mugs, cups, bowls, dishes, jugs, and teapots all refined and adjusted with every new batch.

Working on a traditional kick-wheel and producing small quantities at a time, she embraces the natural variations in size and colour that come with the handmade process. Her signature three-quarter glazed pieces reveal the fired texture of the clay, contrasting with the smooth, silky glaze. She delights in the “toasting” effect created in the kiln, where the raw pot and glaze fuse to leave a warm blush across the surface. Her playful “fruity” pieces bring another dimension, decorated with fine slip-trailed lines and painted glazes that celebrate colour and joy.
