Laurence Knoop (SPLICE+FID)
Laurence is a self-taught rope worker and basketmaker whose craft is inseparable from the life he leads. Living nomadically with his partner and two children aboard a 60-foot narrowboat, he creates all his pieces from his floating home and workshop as they travel the inland waterways of the UK. His approach to making is grounded in function and simplicity, shaped by the practical realities of small-space living and a deep connection to the natural world around him.
What began as a personal exploration into knotting and rope work has grown into a distinctive craft practice. Laurence draws from traditional skills but adapts them with instinct and experimentation, creating work that is both utilitarian and quietly beautiful. Every piece is designed to be used, coiled baskets, rope trays, hanging storage, objects that suit a pared-back lifestyle but carry an undeniable aesthetic appeal.
His materials are chosen with the same care as his methods. He works almost exclusively with natural fibre ropes, particularly flax grown and processed in Europe and the UK, and collaborates with a textile artist in the Peak District who hand-dyes the ropes with plant-based colour. The result is a collection of tactile, grounded pieces that reflect a slower, more intentional way of life.
